I’m not really sure how to rate this book, 3 or 4 stars. I’ve settled for 3 which does seem a bit harsh because I did enjoy the book and it is a really good story and idea. However, there were lots of things that niggled me and set it apart from the other books I’ve rated four stars.
First was the proof reading, while the first part may have been checked, the closer I got to the end, the worse it got, as though whoever read it got bored of checking it. Unfortunately, I’m the sort of person who gets distracted by mistakes, if you don’t then you probably won’t mind.
Then there were the characters. Eden seems to devolve from a semi grounded teenager to an immature child. However, that is how she is treated so it’s no wonder really. Professor Saint spent the first part of the book getting on my nerves with his superiority and arrogance but then seemed to have a personality transplant and I found myself liking him. Juan spent a good portion of the book deserving a slap (in my opinion) but then suddenly developed a backbone and became someone with potential.
Well it’s been a while since I’ve been able to get on here, been reading lots but been busy with two new jobs, one as a scientist (hence the fact that science posts will start appearing) and another as a first aid volunteer. I’ve also developed a healthy liking for crafty things so watch out for those
I’ve just finished reading the entire Famous Five series by Enid Blyton.
I love the books and, even reading them as an adult, they’re still well written and great stories.
5 stars
So I haven’t posted anything recently. Not because I haven’t been reading anything but partly because I have been reading too many books and partly because I have started a new course at university so I haven’t had a lot of time!!
I really enjoyed this book. I’ve read a few Discworld books before but decided to start at the beginning this time.
While it is obvious that Terry Pratchett’s writing style has evolved and improved slightly over the books, this book is still a funny, interesting read. I love the ‘world on it’s head’ theme about the series and I’m really looking forward to reading some more.
4 1/2 stars
I’m torn between giving this book 3 or 4 stars. I’ve settled on four because 3 seems a little too harsh for me as the book is well written and I think 3 1/2 would be a better show of how much I enjoyed it.
The beginnning of the book was slow and it took a long while to get going. I really, really enjoyed the middle although it was a bit more gruesome than I expected. Had the book finished at the point where the truth was discovered about Harriet then it would have deserved 4 1/2 stars. Unfortunately, it carried on and went downhill. Once again it became slow and uninteresting.
Part of my dissapointment is due to the hype that’s surrounded the book with the film and I just feel it didn’t live up to my expectations.
3 1/2 stars
Sabriel is the first in Garth Nix’s ‘Old Kingdom’ series, one I will definitely be reading. Following Sabriel, the Abhorsen’s daughter, on her quest to rescue her father (the ‘good’ necromancer) from death where he has been trapped. It’s a dangerous journey but very well described and you find yourself hoping that everything will turn out well in the end.
Very well written, I like most of Garth Nix’s books, and I’m looking forward to finding the next one, Lirael, in the library!

The Romanov Prophecy is a story about the reintroduction of a Tsar in modern Russia and a race against time to uncover a trail leading to the descendents of the original Romanovs. A very interesting and fast paced read, I enjoyed the interactions between the main character and those around him although I have to admit I found him to be a bit slow on the uptake about some things!
Overall, I’ll give this 4 stars as it was a good book but there were a few bits that could have been improved.
